History

The Taj Mahal sits on the right bank of the beautiful Yamuna River. The main structure is nestling with the awe-inspiring Mughal garden sprawling over an area of nearly 17 hectares. The construction work of Taj Mahal was started in 1632 AD and was completed in 1648 AD. To shape this ancient wonder, the emperor ordered over 22,000 labourer, stone-cutters, inlayers, carvers, painters, calligraphers, dome builders and numerous other artisans from his empire as well as from the Central Asia and Iran. It is also believed over 1,000 elephants were deployed to transfer building materials used during the construction.

Architecture

Taj Mahal is surely the greatest architectural success among all the monuments built in Indo-Islamic architecture. The color blend of lush emerald gardens, reddish pathway, clear blue sky and pearly white Taj make the whole scene look like a perfect scenery. The marble and inlay work with precious and semi precious stones make many jaws drop. The dome of Taj Mahal is its most beautiful feature. It is around 35 meters (115 ft) high and is decorated with a lotus design. Four minarets frame the tomb at each corner, adding to its beauty. These minarets are more than 40 meters high and are divided into three parts. Some of the most beautiful works inside the Taj mahal include flowers carved in marble, detail of pietra dura jali inlay, intricate pierce work, incised painting, and jail work. Get Tour Quotes
